State of health [Legacy]

Hi all,

today I want to talk about Legacy state of health, 2 weeks after the RagaBan. By now, we can say that there are these main archetype:

  1. Aggro

  2. Tempo

  3. Midrange

  4. Combo

Aggro

Aggro, by now, are strategy based on Vengevine plus a secondary main threat, in the form of Hogaak or Madness creature. The first deck (HogaakVine) is more relies more on graveyard than the second one, and has got a combo gameplan too, with Bridge from Below, Altar and Hoogak. It's strong against Tempo and Control, can suffer fast combo decks. The second one relies more on autodiscard, but play burning inquiry that can be a strong disrupt engine. The matchup are pretty same of the other one. Between this two, probably i would play the first one, because RiP isn't played a lot.

Tempo

URx Delver, even after RagaBan, it's a strong competitor. The actual premiere strategy is straight UR, with a lot of flex spot, in the form of removal distribution (Bolt, Unholy Heat, Chain Lightning, Tarfire), threat number 13 and 14 (Sprite Dragon and Young Pyromancer), and lands (Full set of Volcanic, Full set of Volcanic plus Steam Vents, only 3 Volcanic). After this, you can see Temur and Jeskai, that use Tarmogoyf or Mystic as additional threat. I think that Jeskai is better than Temur because you can play Prismatic Ending Main Deck and a lot of strong hate card in the side (T3feri, Containment Priest, RiP) but you're a lot more susceptible to land hate with more complex manabase, so I would go for straight UR by the way (even if I usually play Jeskai because I love SFM XD). This deck suffers midrange deck, but it's strong against combo and a 55/45 against control and aggro.

Midrange

By now, these are the most played midrange decks: Death & Taxes, Stoneblade, UWr Breacher. All of them utilizes a very specific angle of attack, the first one utilize land/mana denial in order to get mana and tempo advantage, the utilizes card like Recruiter and SFM for card advantage. Lastly, with Yorion, it can reutilize all this etb effect. I think that this deck is good against Tempo and the other Midrange decks, but suffers a lot the Combo deck because it doesn't have a lot of way to disrupt combo pieces and suffers Control deck. Then we have Stoneblade decks, by now the main deck is pretty straightforward, with only few flex spot (I count 4 cards). The deck relies on a lot of 2x1 cards (SFM, Snapcaster, Jace TMS), some lock pieces (T3feri, Narset, B2B) and cheap interaction (Plow and Prismatic Ending) in order to stabilize the early game and the bury the opponent with Card Advantage. Different from Death & Taxes, it has a pretty decent matchup against Combo, Tempo and Aggro, but suffers a lot the 4/5c control pile, and it doesn't have a really good matchup against other Midrange of the format. Lastly we have UWr Breacher, that relies on the combo Days Undoing + Breacher/Narset. Even without the combo, the deck has a lot of lock pieces (Breacher, Narset, Teferi) and a way to recover from low card count with Days Undoing. It plays more or less the same removal package of Stoneblade. I think that by now, is the best Midrange of the format, can steal game from nothing with the combo, but can play a longer game because it disable a lot of card selection/advantage with Breacher and Narset.

Combo

By now, there are a lot of combo deck: Reanimator, Depths, Storm, Painter, Show and Tell, Elves, Doomsday. Reanimator probably is the fastest one, can consinstently combo off on turn 1 with protection of free discard. The deck, by the way, suffer graveyard hate, and the later the game goes, the worse it become. Best MU are aggro, the other combo (usually you're faster), and non-blue fair deck. Then we have Depths, that relies on combo Dark Depths + Thespian Stage. By now, the premier Depths deck is GW, that is slower than BG, but it can play a longer game with Reclaimer and Knight of Reliquary. Moreover, with white, it can acces to a lot of strong sideboard card. This deck can handle aggro and tempo deck, suffering midrange, control and faster combo deck. Storm is Storm, it relies on casting multiple spells and then casting Tendrils of Agony. The strong of Storm is that, the longer the game is, better the game becomes, because it can sculpt his hand in order to dodge the counterspell. It suffers aggro, tempo and faster deck, having good matchup against midrange and combo deck. Painter doesn't have a pretty stock decklist, I've seen it as Monored, Monowhite, UW, Monoblack. More or less it relies on the combo Painter Servant+ Grindstone. To be honest, i don't think that by now is well positioned, because it suffers removal and artifact hate. Show and Tell used to be the premiere Combo deck, but now is percentage has fallen down. It relies on casting an early Show and Tell in order to cheat in play cards like Emrakul, Griselbrand or Omniscience. Back in the days the main color combination was UR, using Sneack Attack as additional Show and Tell. By now there's a UG version, that relies on Uro and Carpet of Flower in order to get Card Advantage and mana advantage. This suffers tempo deck and midrange deck, but it's strong against aggro and control. We've Elves, a combo deck that relies on casting multiple elves, drawing a ton o card with Glimpse of Nature then overwhelm the opponet with massive board or just winning the game with Craterhoof Behemot. This deck suffer tempo, as other combo deck, control with mass removal and other combo deck, but it plays well against all the remaining field. Lastly we've Doomsday, that relies on comboing off with Doomsday and Thassa's Oracle. The deck is pretty strong because utilizes a lot of tutor effect, free counter and cantrips in order to win the game. The bad matchup is tempo, otherwise it has a lot of even to favored matchup.

Control

Lastly, we have control. More or less, by now the control deck are 4/5c pile that relies on Uro as main threat/card advantage, then the play a lot of different cards like Field of the Dead, Life from the Loam, Sylvan Lybrary, Jace TMS, and so on. These type of decks are a lot flexible, but not so cheap IRL because they play a lot of duals land. They have good matchup against Midrange, but bad matchup against combo and aggro. A 45/55 against Tempo.

Final Thougts

That's it, by now Legacy meta it's pretty varied and you can experiment a lot. I'm playing Jeskai Delverblade, for example!
