[LoR] Legends of Runeterra, a new challenger

Hello everybody,

today I wish to talk you about a new game that i really enjoy to play: Legends of Runeterra (https://playruneterra.com/it-it/)

It's a CCG free to play, and I've to be honest, it's really free 2 play with no buy to win mechanics.

Let's talk about it!

How to play

Essentially, this game takes a lot from 2 big player of card games, Heartstone and Magic the Gathering.

Here the features:

No lands

Every turn you get a crystal mana, and the unspent mana goes to a special pool called spell mana, and you can store max 3 spell mana. You can use the spell only for casting non minion and non champion cards, and when you cast that type card, you spend automatically first spell mana, than the normal mana.

Deckbuilding Constraints

You can choose maximum 2 regions for your deck, and every region has got a playstyle, for example Noxus try to win the game dealing direct damage to your opponent, Demacia try to win the game with a big army, etc...

After the region selection, you can start with your deck. As you can see from the image above, your deck must contain exactly 40 cards, and in this 40 cards you can play maximum 6 champions. Champion are special cards that can level up for special effect!

Left you can see Jinx level 1, after you empty your hand it became level 2, letting you to draw one extra card every turn and gettin an extra spell when you empty again your hand (1 for turn). Moreover her stats increases. Absolutely house!

Then we have minion, that are like champion without the opportunity to level up.

Lastly we have spells, that have a one shot effect, for example drawing some cards or dealing damage.

Dealing Damage

As you can see from the image of Jinx, she's got 3 values: Mana cost (Top Left), Attack (Bottom Left) and Life (Bottomo Right). When a creature deal damage to another creature, it affects its life. When life reach 0, that creature dies. The life doesn't restore at the end of the turn like Magic! Instead, if the creature isn't blocked, it deal damage to your opponent Nexus equal to the attack of the creature.

Speed of cards

Like Magic, every card has a speed and you can cast card in response to another only that card is fast or burst.

So, you can cast slow spells or creature only if the stack is empty. You can cast fast cards in response of a slow spell, creature, before the damages or another fast card. You can cast burst spell in response of a slow spell, creature, before the damages or a fast card and it resolves immediately, so your opponent cannot interact with you burst spells, as you can't interact with your opponent burst spells.

Winning a match

Obviously, the final goal of the game is winning a match. You can win the match in 3 different ways:

  1. Bring to 0 your opponent Nexus;

  2. Your opponent try to draw a card when the deck has 0 card;

  3. You win card.

You can attack only when you have an attack token (the sword near the mana pool), and you can only attack the opponent, the opponent decide which creature block and who blocks, exactly like Magic combat phase. But you need to pay attention, the damages resolve from left to right, so some triggers can happen during combat step!

Final Thoughts

That's it, this is the game!

I really enjoy playing it because it's really simple to cllect the card and playing the deck that you like, and I'm going to write some primer and stream some matches!

Regards,

Vito
